History & Details
In the heart of Queenstown, New Zealand, 23-year-old Siggi Bjarni found inspiration - the breathtaking beauty and adventurous spirit of the place made him realize the untapped potential of his hometown - Hvolsvöllur in Iceland. Like Queenstown mesmerized travellers, Siggi envisioned Hvolsvöllur as Iceland's next adventure hub.
Siggi's dream materialized when he founded Midgard Adventure in 2010, a day shy of the infamous Eyjafjallajökull eruption. The establishment wasn't just a business but a tribute to Siggi's childhood memories of exploring the Icelandic wilderness. The venture grew by adding Addi, Siggi's cousin Hildur's husband. Their shared love for adventure soon attracted Stefnir, a neighbouring horse farmer. By 2013, Björg, Addi's mother, left her comfortable life in Reykjavik, joining them as C.E.O., ensuring that the family venture was robustly managed.
Interestingly, the current Midgard Basecamp structure began as a cement factory, built over 40 years ago by Siggi’s father, Svenni. The once-neglected factory was repurposed for storing and repairing jeeps and equipment. However, the passion and vision of the team turned this erstwhile factory into a welcoming haven for adventurers. Guests could relax, share tales, and truly experience the Icelandic way of life.
Despite the clear vision and passion behind the Basecamp idea, external support was a challenge. Local banks remained sceptical. Yet, with determination, the team soldiered on. Armed with hammers, nails, and immense passion, they built their dream - and family and friends contributed heartily, making the place truly unique with handmade furniture and personalized touches.
The Basecamp story took another turn when Hildur's Swiss friend, Stefan, visited. Stefan's enthusiasm for the project turned him from a visitor to an investor. He became a co-owner, moved to Hvolsvöllur, and even marked his commitment with a Midgard tattoo.
By May 2017, the doors of Midgard Basecamp swung open. Hildur and Stefan managed the operations, while Kalle, Addi’s uncle, helmed the kitchen. The team believes in the spirit of community. Unlike more prominent tour companies, Basecamp's roots lie deep in Hvolsvöllur, and the team ensures their success benefits the local community.
Today, Basecamp is more than just a stopover; it’s an experience. Guests are treated to tasty meals, refreshing beers, and genuine friendliness. The staff - mostly family, have woven a bond of shared adventures, dreams, and laughter. For those who linger, the warmth of the community is infectious, making them feel like extended family. And it's not uncommon to find staff off-duty, lounging with their families, sharing stories of their adventures. Among the regulars is Hekla, the black Labrador of Addi and Hildur, adding to the homely atmosphere of the Basecamp.
Midgard Basecamp embodies passion, community, and adventure in Hvolsvöllur. You're always home at Basecamp, whether you're seeking thrill or tranquillity.
