Vök Baths
Vök Baths - a symbol of nature’s splendour and human ingenuity stands on the pristine shore of Lake Urriðavatn in East Iceland. Established in July 2019, the site has quickly risen in prominence due to its rare geothermal floating pools that offer an infinity view, made even more unique given East Iceland's colder geothermal profile.
History & Details
The intriguing history of Vök Baths is interwoven with local legends and natural phenomena. Residents near Lake Urriðavatn had long observed areas of the lake that never froze, even during the harsh Icelandic winters. These ice-free spots were used to wash clothes, especially when unfrozen water was scarce during wintertime. Myths evolved around these warm spots, with tales of a creature named Tuska emerging from the geothermal springs. The local term for these ice-free patches is "Vök," with the specific spots known as Tuskuvakir. Today, these same geothermal spots serve as the main attraction of Vök Baths, providing guests with a serene, floating experience in infinity pools filled with warm, geothermal water.
While Iceland is renowned for its geothermal wonders, the eastern part of the country, where Vök Baths is situated, is in a geothermal cold spot. This makes the presence of the baths even more remarkable and rare for the region.
Water Quality & Origin
The water at Vök Baths is sourced from boreholes just a few hundred meters from the facility, reaching depths of 1000-2000 meters. Water emerges at a temperature of about 75°C. It's the only geothermal water in Iceland certified for drinking, a testament to its unparalleled purity. Guests can even savour this pristine water at the tea bar in the lobby, which offers tea infused with herbs from the nearby Vallarnes farm.
Amenities
At Vök Baths, the experience extends beyond the pools. The on-site Vök Bistro, dedicated to gastronomic excellence, showcases an array of delightful dishes and lighter fare like soups and smoothies. Prioritizing sustainability, ingredients are predominantly locally sourced, often organic, and reflect a close collaboration with neighbouring farmers.
Beyond gastronomy, guests can revel in an array of other amenities. These include two land-based hot springs, a wading pool, a steam bath, a refreshing cold mist tunnel, an in-water pool bar, and Vök Bistro. In a unique touch, complimentary body products from Sóley Organics enhance the shower areas.

The facility can simultaneously accommodate up to 202 guests in its pools and remains open throughout the year.
